Asian Handicap Explained โ the Singapore bettor's guide.

What is Asian handicap?
Asian handicap is a form of soccer betting that removes the draw outcome and levels the playing field between mismatched teams by applying a goal advantage or deficit before kick-off. Originating in Asia in the late 1990s, it has become the dominant betting market in Singapore โ and for good reason.
In a standard 1X2 market, your money is split three ways (home win, draw, away win). Asian handicap collapses that to just two outcomes, which means the odds are naturally more competitive and you are never locked into a losing position simply because neither team managed to score.
The "handicap" part works like this: the stronger team is given a goal deficit (for example, Arsenal โ1), while the weaker team receives a goal head-start (Luton +1). After the handicap is applied, you bet on which side wins the adjusted scoreline.
Whole-goal lines (โ1, +2)
The simplest form. The handicap is a round number, so results are binary: win or lose. There is one exception โ the push (also called a void result), which happens when the adjusted scoreline is exactly level.
Worked example โ Arsenal โ1 vs Luton at SGD 100:
- You back Arsenal โ1 at odds of 1.90. Stake: SGD 100.
- Match ends Arsenal 2 โ 0 Luton. Adjusted score: Arsenal 1 โ 0. Arsenal win โ you collect SGD 190 (SGD 90 profit).
- Match ends Arsenal 1 โ 0 Luton. Adjusted score: 0 โ 0. Push โ stake refunded in full.
- Match ends Arsenal 0 โ 0 or Arsenal lose. You lose โ SGD 100 gone.
The push scenario is unique to whole-goal lines and is what makes them feel "safe" to newer punters. If Arsenal only scrape a one-goal win, you simply get your money back rather than losing.
Half-goal lines (โ0.5, +1.5)
Half-goal lines are arguably the cleanest bet in soccer. Because there are no whole numbers involved, a push is impossible. Every match produces a winner and a loser โ there are no refunds.
Backing Arsenal โ0.5 is functionally the same as backing Arsenal to win on a standard 1X2 market, except the draw is eliminated and the odds are often slightly sharper. Backing Luton +1.5 means Luton must either win or draw for your bet to land. A Luton loss by exactly one goal (say 1โ0 to Arsenal) still wins for the Luton backer.
Half-goal lines are popular with punters who want a clear, uncomplicated result. You know exactly where you stand the moment the final whistle blows.
Quarter-goal lines (โ0.25, โ0.75)
Quarter-goal handicaps are the Singapore punter's favourite โ and the format where Maxim88 adds the most value over Singapore Pools, which does not offer this variant.
A quarter-goal line works by splitting your stake across two adjacent whole/half lines simultaneously. For example, backing Arsenal โ0.25 at SGD 100 means:
- SGD 50 on Arsenal 0 (level handicap, push if Arsenal draw)
- SGD 50 on Arsenal โ0.5 (Arsenal must win outright)
This creates four possible outcomes instead of two:
- Arsenal win: both halves win โ full payout.
- Draw: level handicap half is refunded; โ0.5 half loses โ net result: lose half your stake.
- Arsenal lose: both halves lose โ full loss.
The โ0.75 line works similarly: SGD 50 on โ0.5 and SGD 50 on โ1. Arsenal must win by two goals for a full win. A one-goal Arsenal victory yields a half-win (win on the โ0.5, push on the โ1).
Quarter lines give you a middle ground and are particularly valuable when you have a lean but not a strong conviction โ the half-win/half-loss mechanism softens the edges on close calls.
Why Singapore punters love Asian handicap
Several reasons make Asian handicap the go-to market for savvy Singapore bettors:
- Better value on favourites. Backing Manchester City โ1 on Asian handicap almost always yields better odds than backing them on 1X2, because the draw is removed from your risk.
- Quarter lines not available at Singapore Pools. Maxim88 offers โ0.25, โ0.75, โ1.25, and โ1.75 lines across EPL, La Liga, and Bundesliga fixtures. This granularity lets you fine-tune your position.
- Reduced house edge. With only two outcomes (or a push), bookmakers run tighter margins than on three-way 1X2 markets.
- Live handicap betting. Maxim88 updates Asian handicap lines in-play throughout the match, opening opportunities when form shifts mid-game.
Worked example: EPL matchweek
Let's walk through a realistic EPL matchweek example to see how the lines interact. Say Liverpool (home) host Brentford in a mid-season fixture. Maxim88 opens the following Asian handicap lines:
- Liverpool โ1.5 @ 2.00 | Brentford +1.5 @ 1.90
- Liverpool โ1.25 @ 1.85 | Brentford +1.25 @ 2.05
- Liverpool โ1 @ 1.72 | Brentford +1 @ 2.18
You back Liverpool โ1.25 at SGD 100. Match ends 2โ0. Adjusted against the two split lines: Liverpool โ1 (push โ refunded SGD 50) and Liverpool โ1.5 (Liverpool win on that line โ SGD 50 ร 1.85 = SGD 92.50). Net return: SGD 50 refund + SGD 92.50 = SGD 142.50, a profit of SGD 42.50 on a SGD 100 stake.
Had Liverpool only won 1โ0, the โ1 half would push (SGD 50 back) and the โ1.5 half would lose (SGD 50 gone). Net return: SGD 50 โ a half-loss of SGD 50 rather than a full loss.
Quarter-goal lines โ only at Maxim88.
Singapore Pools doesn't offer โ0.25 or โ0.75 lines. Open a free Maxim88 account and access them today.
